in hoc signo

Chrismon_Sancti_Ambrosii

Men fell in death…

blood spilled

drenched the earth

battle lines drawn in blood and defeat

chariots of men and gods

broken to pieces

burnt to smithereens

total anarchy and chaos

a woeful defeat for Constantine.

Alas! the sacrifices to dead gods

ends up in vain.

An Emperor faces crisis

never before seen…

his army look to him

in hope yet despair

the battleground is running in blood

the blood of the men

loyal to the Great Constantine.

Yet, in the darkness of defeat and despair

man remembers God

the One the True the Only

the One who is Holy

who needs neither sacrifice nor blood

for the only sacrifice needed was His Son

Whose costly blood was shed once

For all…

In a Dream,

the Emperor gets a visit

from the One God

who reveals Himself in a sign

evident for all to see

the in hoc signo

which assures Constantine

that in this sign, you will conquer

and Conquer, he did.

Strengthened and encouraged,

he engraves the holy symbol

on his loyal armies’ shields

believing that the Christian God

has come through for him.

He leads his armies

to a battle so deadly

they would need

all the valiance and courage,

as they advance against Maxentius

upon the Milvian Bridge.

The battle is fierce

the war is deadly

for at the Bridge of Milvian

Constantine decides his fate.

His forces advance,

in fight and fury

and then, quite suddenly

the tides turn curiously

because Constantine is winning

and Emperor Maxentius and his army

have been tipped over

to drown in the churning Tiber.

For with God

all things are possible.

Therefore, though

the storms may rage

and you feel you’re in a cage,

surrender simply

to the God of all Grace.

And now,

The symbol of Chi Rho;

a symbol of possibilities.

From thence emerges

a glorious representation of victory

that has survived through the ages

and births a story

of man’s communion with God

and how He came down to show mercy

on the Milvian Bridge

…many years ago in history.

Amen and Amen.
